Our features editor, Amanda Mtuli, shares her experience after spending a night at Rustig – a family-owned hideout that offers breathtaking views.
The farm is situated on the southern slopes of Magaliesberg. I took my sister along for the 45-minute drive, which got a little bumpy for about 5km before our destination. But, the beauty that is Rustig made us forget this. The green foliage, clear blue sky and crisp fresh air lived up to Rustig’s promise of tranquillity. The resort is beautiful!
Hospitality
The staff at Rustig is friendly and helpful. We were received by Victor, our guide for the day. He took us to our room, which was at Heritage House – the main house at the farm. It has three spacious bedrooms that accommodate a total of six people. From the minute we arrived, we felt welcomed. Victor checked on us regularly and was available to assist with anything.
Wining and dining
Once we were settled in, Victor took us outside. A table was beautifully laid out for us, with a picnic basket filled with an assortment of delicious treats. After digging in, we went on a drive around the farm. Victor explained the origins of the resort and also showed us some of the animals at the farm. We ended the day with a delicious farm-style dinner consisting of homemade bread, mixed salad, butternut, Oostermoed lamb roast, and malva pudding and ice-cream for dessert.
Activities and entertainment
The resort does not offer many activities. But if you’re up for adventure, you can go hiking or enjoy a braai in the wilderness. I was feeling adventurous, so my sister and I went on a 5km hike after breakfast. The hiking trail has clear signs, making it easy to follow. Being winter, it was a bit misty when we started off. But, it quickly cleared and we got a nice view of the farm and the mountain range of Magaliesberg. The resort also has a beautiful swimming pool. However, we could only admire it from a distance due to the cold weather.
Overall, I think this is a great place and a wonderful way to take a break from the busy, city life, at an affordable price. Visit rustig.co.za to find out more, and enjoy!
