Buhlebezwe Siwani shares her excitement about exhibiting at this year’s FNB Joburg Art Fair.
1. I believe that my art captures a moment in history. Everything I make is influenced by my collective memory, African spirituality, history as well as culture and its effects on the black female body. I create art because I know that even when I’m gone, my work can still be accessed by generations to come.
2. My creative expression is predominantly performance-orientated. I create performances that sometimes turn into performative photography, video or installations. As a traditional healer and an artist, my work is naturally thought-provoking with strong elements of truth about the world we live in.
3. I’m excited to be taking part in this year’s FNB Joburg Art Fair. Attendees can expect the unexpected as my old work merges with the new in a different dimension. I hope that my art will empower people to be more open-minded as I challenge the society that does not care much for black female bodies.
