Actress and celebrity chef Lucia Mthiyane, better known as chef Lucia, lets us in on her girls’ expedition on the sunny shores of Croatia.
Nothing beats going away with your girls. My best friend Brenda turned 40 this year. Prior to this, she had expressed her wish to celebrate this milestone in Croatia. Initially, six of us were planning the trip, but two dropped out.
Airbnb is really handy when it comes to affordable accommodation. The preparations for the trip were daunting. We had to apply for visas, organise travel insurance and so on. So next time, we will consider using an agent for the nitty-gritty details.
It is amazing how time flew, and in no time we were packing our bags and jetting off. It was an out-of-body experience. Though I had seen pictures of the eastern European country, nothing prepared us for the beauty that is Split – the second-largest city in the country. We spent two days exploring it and its markets. We then packed our bags and ferried to Hvar, a Croatian island on the Adriatic Sea.
Croatia has a wide range of restaurants. However, I looked forward to having Croatian cuisine but couldn’t find anything. This was a let-down. We spent two days in Hvar where we hired a boat and skipper for 350 euros. We used this to visit other islands such Palmižana. We spent the day swimming and also indulged in sea bass grilled on coal. Unfortunately, after this adventure, it was time to part ways as I had to return to South Africa for work commitments. Because of this, I plan to visit Croatia again next year so I can really absorb all the beauty.
