Luis Alberto “Venado” Lopez made a triumphant return to the ring on Saturday night, scoring a first-round knockout victory over Eduardo Montoya in Mexicali, Mexico.
Lopez, a former IBF featherweight champion, entered the fight amid concerns about his health following a brain bleed sustained in his knockout loss to Angelo Leo last August. However, he quickly put doubts to rest with a dominant performance at Palenque del Fex.
Montoya (21-8-1, 14 KOs) came out aggressively, testing Lopez’s durability early with counter left hooks. Lopez (31-3, 18 KOs) initially struggled with accuracy, swinging wildly at his taller opponent. But as the round progressed, he adjusted his approach, luring Montoya in before landing a perfectly timed left hook that sent him crashing into the ropes.
Rather than retreat, Montoya squared up and leaned forward, allowing Lopez to capitalize with a devastating left hook to the body. Montoya dropped to the canvas for a second time and was unable to beat the count.
This was Lopez’s first fight since losing his title and facing a career-threatening injury. His co-manager, Hector Fernandez, recently stated that Lopez’s MRI results came back “clear and normal,” though it remains uncertain whether he will regain licensing in the United States.
For Montoya, the loss marked his sixth career defeat by knockout. Meanwhile, Lopez’s emphatic win signals his readiness to move forward, potentially eyeing another title run.
