Although we love a great matte lipstick, let’s be honest, it can be difficult to apply and most formulations dry out your lips. Matte make-up on other parts of your face (like eyes) can also be very unflattering if you have anything older than the skin of a 20-year-old.

That’s why we’re very happy that glossy make-up is starting to trend in 2019. Here’s how to make it work for you.
1. On your face. If we’re talking a full face of make-up, the aim would be to glow rather than shine. If you’re after an all-over dewy glow, opt for an illuminating foundation (look for keywords like radiance, illuminating, glow) and skip the powder.
Another way of achieving this look is to use your regular foundation and then apply a gold-toned liquid highlighter to about 50% of your face with a dampened blending sponge – focus on the centre of the face, and don’t be too heavy-handed. This works especially well if you have oily skin that requires a mattifying foundation to prevent the wrong kind of shine.

2. On your lips. The days where our only options for lip gloss were frosted or clear are long gone. You can now have glossy lips in a variety of opacities, shades and textures.
Texture-wise you can choose between anything from lip oils like Clarins Instant Light Comfort Lip Oil, R335 that will moisturise your lips with a luxurious shine (with or without a bit of colour) to more sticky gloss formulas that stay put for longer, but provide less moisturising properties.
As far as colour and opacity goes, the cosmetic department is your oyster, so to speak. Lip products with glossy finishes are now available in even fully opaque finishes and bold, bright colours – it doesn’t have to be frosted baby pink.
3. On your eyes. Glossy lashes became all the rage a couple of years ago, and they look beautifully natural. Have your eyelashes tinted to ensure they’re a nice even colour, and then apply a nourishing oil (like Argan or Avocado) with a clean mascara brush.

If you’d like to fake the look, opt for the smoothest, most metallic cream eyeshadow you can find – once they set they don’t budge. Pack it on tightly and blend away the edges. If you’re after a truly liquid look, opt for a shade that looks close to neutral on your skin tone.
