We all need a break from time to time, and a spa is a great way to relieving stress and getting into shape. Our team reviews the best spas in town.
Our beauty and health writer, Keletso Modisakeng sums up her two favourite spas
Kloofzicht Lodge and Spa
Driving to the location in Muldersdrift, Gauteng took around 45 minutes. I welcomed the change in scenery as the hustle and bustle of the city made way for a breathtakingly serene landscape. Passing through the gates to the lodge and spa, I saw zebras and antelope, which was a beautiful and relaxing sight. On arrival I was warmly welcomed with a refreshing drink. I immediately changed into my gown and witnessed two very interesting presentations: the first one was for Esse, a South African beauty company, while the second presentation was for Babor, a German-based beauty company. I had the pleasure of testing their products on my skin.
I was also introduced to ‘cupping’, a massage technique that originates from China. This ancient medicinal therapy involves placing heated glasses or cups onto your body, which then creates suction that helps stimulate the flow of energy through your body. I have never felt this relaxed! But, my spoiling session was far from over – my second treatment for the day was a 30-minute back massage, which was absolutely heavenly. I literally sulked when it ended. However, the yummy lunch that awaited me outside was a great consolation.
As much as I loved the treatments, I felt a little cheated that they’re only 30 minutes long and not a full hour. But despite this, the spa was a great experience and I look forward to going there again.
Pyramid Day Spa
The city is wrongfully accused of being a loud and busy place with nowhere to relax. Having discovered a hidden gem in the heart of Jozi, I took time out to relax at the Pyramid Day Spa in Johannesburg on Eloff Street, in Selby.
The downside was getting stuck in traffic and arriving late for my appointment!
I rushed to the changing room on my arrival and I was surprised to find a Jacuzzi, Hollywood-style mirrors and wooden finishes. To me, this was a sign that I was going to be treated like a queen.
I enjoyed a well-needed Herbal Hot stone massage. My masseuse helped me relax and she adjusted the pressure to suit me. My rule of thumb: if you fall asleep during a treatment, then your masseuse has done a brilliant job!
After my massage (and snooze) I enjoyed a delicious lunch with the relaxing sounds of an indoor waterfall behind me.
Arriving late is no way to start off a day of relaxation, so make sure you are familiar with Johannesburg before venturing into the city to experience this beautiful spa. That said, the peace of mind you get from their soothing treatments is definitely worth traveling into the city.
Features editor, Phila Tyekana, shares the 5 best things about Mount Grace Country House & Spa
Mount Grace Country House & Spa
Quietness
On arrival to the hotel, you are met by nature and beautiful scenery of lush trees, fresh air and clear skies. I remember feeling my shoulders relaxing and calm taking over me the minute I arrived. I was met by a driver in a cart who took my bags from the parking lot and drove me to the reception. Suddenly the pressures of meeting deadlines and organising shoots or any other responsibility for that matter were a distant memory. You’ll appreciate the tranquil lifestyle the hotel offers which allows you to just be and let time flow.
Privacy
There are 121 stand-alone rooms the hotel offers so privacy to do as you please comes in magnitudes. The rooms each have a patio with a heated-pool outside. I loved this and for once while on a trip didn’t mind parading around in a swimming costume – my love handles exposed only to my partner.
Adventure
I didn’t do any of the daredevil activities and chose to bask in the glory of simply doing nothing and lazing about (in my swimsuit by the heated pool). But if you are an adventure junkie, mountain biking, hiking, hot air ballooning and even spending a day getting to know the gentle giants at the nearby elephant sanctuary are all available. I regret not going to the elephant sanctuary; elephants are one of my favourite animals. Oh well, next time.
Pampering
A spa with a gym, steam room, Jacuzzi, full service spa treatments, floating pool – which terrified me at first but after a few floats got the hang of it. The pool has speakers underneath which let out calming music and as you drift on the salted water, you feel an indescribable feeling of calm and relaxation.
Fine Dining
The award winning restaurant, Rambling Vine features squarely seasonal menus and an amazing wine list. The restaurant offers fine and exquisite dining with the most amazing service. Friendly smiles pop in to check how you are enjoying your meals and the fireplace creates a cosy winter atmosphere. Twist restaurant is the more laid back restaurant with a buffet for breakfast, lunch and supper offering everything from waffles to sushi.
