When it comes to make-up, it is really difficult to separate myths from facts. Surely if you’ve seen it done in the movies or on Instagram it can’t be that bad? There are some make-up myths that just won’t go away! We explain why they can do more harm than good and what you should do instead.
3 make-up myths you probably believe, but really shouldn’t
Make-up myth 1: You should pump your mascara wand before application.
This action causes air to enter the tube, which dries out the mascara. Dry mascara not only creates lumpy lashes but also shortens the lifespan of the product. The extra air also increases the chances of bacteria growing in the tube and this can lead to infection.
How to apply mascara correctly: Remove the wand from the tube by pulling it up while twisting it back and forth. Get rid of excess mascara by blotting on a tissue or on the edge of the mascara tube. Look up and apply two coats or more of mascara to your top lashes.

Make-up myth 2: Expensive products are better than budget ones.
Splurging on cosmetics may seem warranted, but remember, paying a higher price doesn’t always mean better quality. Sometimes a budget make-up product works just as well (if not better) than its expensive counterpart. Remember that great make-up can be found in all different price ranges.
Here’s how to decide on whether to save or splurge when it comes to make-up. Always read product reviews, and once you’ve made a decision, see what works best for you and your budget.

Make-up myth 3: Use a product until it runs out.
If you think your favourite make-up product is done when it runs out, you’re mistaken. Cosmetics have a very specific shelf life and for good reason. Most make-up contains ingredients that react differently after a certain time, and some can even become toxic.
Not to mention that older products can easily become a breeding ground for bacteria. Both of these can cause skin irritation, rashes and infections.
When should you replace your make-up: Once opened, check the number on the packaging to see how long it lasts for.
