Dr Claude Mashego who was crowned Miss World 2023 speaks on beauty pageants being platforms for advocacy and not about winning.
The 24-year-old medical doctor who competed against 100 women around the world won the beauty pageant. Dr Mashego is candid about using the platform for advocacy and nurturing creativity. In a recent interview with IOL, she said, “It serves as a poignant reminder of our potential, highlighting that courage and fear are complementary facets, and how we navigate them shapes the impact we witness and the legacy we create.”
Dr Mashego describes competing at the pageant as a moment that represented a dream to stand as a beacon of hope for the younger generation.
“For me, championing a cause beyond my own goals lies at the heart of it all. The ability and desire to passionately advocate for a cause I strongly believe in, utilising influential and widespread platforms such as pageantry is a powerful tool and means to spread awareness and ignite change for a cause close to the heart,” says Dr Mashego.
She emphasises the importance of mentoring in shaping and nurturing the potential of future leaders, whilst highlighting the significant and transformative impact that mentorship can have on individuals as they progress towards leadership roles.
In addition to offering guidance and support, mentorship encourages personal and professional development, enabling individuals to realise their full potential and make valuable contributions to their communities and the world at large.
Dr Mashego is the founder of her own non-profit organisation, Young Leader Network (YLN), which has helped build a network of young leaders and community builders throughout South Africa.
With the help of her organisation, her ultimate goal is to enable them to become valuable contributors to their families, communities, and Africa as a whole.
