People with albinism have little or at times no pigment in their eyes, skin or hair. To avoid sun damage to their skin, they need to wear sunscreen lotions, hats and sun-protective clothing. By applying make-up that both suits your skin colour and is hypoallergenic, you will be protecting your skin against the harsh sun.
Beauty tips I received as a child and still use to date is that sunscreen is your friend. From a young age sunscreen became my best friend and when I grew up I learned that it’s important for everyone no matter what skin tone they are because everyone’s skin can be damaged by the sun. Also, don’t use make-up from a young age, wait until you really need it.
Use make-up to enhance your beauty and do not hide your flaws. Always make sure you look good for yourself first. Being happy about what you see in the mirror is more important than what other people think. “Look good for you,” is something my mother always says.
Your hair is the beginning and end of how you feel, it’s your crown. You can have bad days in other departments but never your hair. Your hair can make or break your entire look.
Knowing your features will help you identify all the trends you should try and what not to do because not everything will work for you. I learned to be experimental from a young age because I needed to know what brings out ‘Refilwe’s eyes’ and what certain traits does she want to bring out. I love my green eyes so I always play around with enhancing them.
Finding your foundation colour will work out best if you have a second opinion so don’t always take a colour fresh off the shelf without trying it on your skin. Don’t think because you know your skin tone that what you see with the naked eye will work best for you. I went from brand to brand before I found the foundation that works best for me.
I am a press powder girl because liquid foundation tends to be pasty and heavy on my skin. I find that a press powder gives me a matte look all day and gives me a more natural look.
I am a blush girl because I am very pale so I need to add colour and tone to my cheeks. Bronzers are for girls with a darker undertone to their skin.
My favourite make-up trend for the season is smokey eyes as it will never go out of style. I love a smokey look because that enhances my green eyes and allows me to have a more clean and classic face with a nude lip colour. I am not a fan of the red and bright pink lip because those shades don’t work well on everyone’s skin tone.
Girls with fair skin like mine should keep their hair blonde by sticking to the lighter shades like ginger, honey and caramel. Black, dark brown and daring colours don’t complement our skin tone so stick to the lighter shades.
When it comes to lip trends and colours I love are anything that doesn’t plump the lips. For those with luscious big lips like mine, nude shades are a great buy and will give you a glow without making your lips stand out. A touch of plum shades to add colour and character is also a lifetime trend for those with fair skin. Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj might do a trend but that doesn’t mean it will work for you. If you want to try a trend seen on the stars, always compare the trend from a person with the same skin tone as you.
