Meet Antonio Ambrosio, a men’s fashion designer named one of GQ’s Best Dressed Men in 2015. His stylish designs were noticed through his Instagram account, and have landed him deals with top luxury brands such as Picot & Moss as well as OTAA Australia. He chats to us about working his way from a sales assistant to designing his own garments, sustainability in the fashion industry as well as his winter fashion tips.
1.How did you work your way from being a sales assistant to designing your own suits, and representing top luxury brands?
After developing an interest in fashion design while working as a sales assistant at Hackett London, I devoted many hours after work to studying traditional Italian and English bespoke artistry. I also learnt basic production skills. I’ve managed to have a huge influence on men’s fashion and luxury lifestyle through my Instagram account. This helped me acquire relationships with Picot & Moss, OTAA Australia and other clients.
2. You were named one of GQ’s Best Dressed Men in 2015. How did that feel?
It was an amazing feeling. Style is unique and varies among individuals, so I am honoured to know that my sense of style is being acknowledged.
3. Tell us about your relationship with OTAA.
I’m the brand’s ambassador in Africa. Because we share a passion for quality menswear, we have a great relationship.
4.Where do you draw inspiration for your designs?
My designs are inspired by neoclassicism, surrealism, post-impressionist art combined with traditional English and Italian bespoke artistry that has modern silhouettes.
5. What’s your take on the state of men’s fashion in South Africa?
We’re now seeing more bold choices, and that is exciting. I love that we incorporate our traditional heritage with modern trends. This is what sets SA fashion apart, putting it in the global stage.
6. How can the fashion industry become more sustainable?
Designers and brands should put the products first; consumers want great fashion and quality. It has become less about quality and more about making garments fast and cheap.
7. What are your top three style tips for men this winter?
Always keep it simple by purchasing timeless garments. Ensure that your outfit has a proper fit and structure; the objective is to look slim and stylish. Own at least one Antonio Ambrosio suit.
