Jazz lovers are excited that the 2011 Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year award winner Bokani Dyer, who recently released his fourth studio music album titled Neo Native, will be entertaining them with the soulful music offering which he is popular for. The jazz composer, pianist and producer chats to us about his love for music and upcoming show.
Bokani Dyer on his music
I love making and performing music for a living. I’m grateful that my life is filled with music because I believe that creating it is my life’s purpose. I’m happy to be doing what I love.
My love for music began in my early childhood. My father, Steve Dyer, a renowned jazz musician exposed me to music when I was a child. But, as I grew older, I found myself naturally drawn to it.
Creating music is a beautiful mystery to me. I find it interesting that my creative process starts with an unexplainable impulse that pushes me to explore rhythms and beats. The way that music comes together is never the same, and sometimes even I don’t understand how I manage to create the beautiful music that I do.
I’m honoured to have a lot of career highlights. I love performing my music, and I’m blessed that I get invited to festival across the world, such as the London Jazz Festival, Musique en Ete Festival in Geneva and Festival Metis in France, to name a few.
Don’t miss Bokani Dyer’s performance tonight
Tonight I’ll be performing at the Untitled Basement in Braamfontein. I believe that its divine intervention that I was chosen to perform in such a beautiful space. It’s the type of setting I had in mind when I was working on my new project titled Freedom Melody Mixtape. I’m looking forward to performing in a space that has a basement aesthetic.
Catch him tonight at We Got The Jazz feat. Bokani Dyer music event starting at 8pm. Tickets at Quicket or the door.
