Last night Forbes released their list of the highest earning athletes in the last year. Between all of them, these sportsmen earned over $ 1 billion dollars collectively (R15 b).
Cristiano Ronaldo tops the list with $88 million (R1.3 b) to dethrone Floyd Mayweather who topped the list last year. A quarter of the footballers money came from his off field deals. They include his CR7 clothing line and partnerships with luxury brand Tag Heuer, Herbalife and his contract with Nike. His counterpart Lionel Messi took the number 2 spot with $81.4 million (R 1.2 b). Apart from his contract with Barcelona, Messi’s deals include a partnership with Adidas and sponsorships from Huawei, Tata Motors, Pepsi Cola, Gillette and Electronic Arts.
