As a women’s magazine on women’s month, we thought it would be appropriate to put together a list of our top 10 favourite women right now who are making waves. These women range from DJ’s to radio guru’s and sports presenters.
BONANG MATHEBA
No list would be complete without our girl B*, the queen of everything. She has recently split with well-known brands Metro FM and Top Billing, but despite that, she continues to be on her A game with a few other jobs under her belt, which include being a presenter for Clash of the Choirs, having her own underwear and perfume line at Woolworths, being the face of Revlon and dabbling as a producer for upcoming hit shows. It’s no wonder she is so loved by millions.
LIRA
Her sweet, sensational voice has won the hearts of many fans worldwide. Her heart however, belongs to South Africa. Pure talent has made Lira one of the most celebrated songstresses. She inspires many young women to follow their dreams and be themselves while doing it.
YVONNE CHAKA CHAKA
The music industry has been graced with her presence for over 20 years and she still continues to inspire those around her. Despite her fame, Yvonne Chaka Chaka is an icon who has remained humble and down to earth. Many up and coming artists aspire to radiate the same timeless elegance that she has managed to display throughout her career.
BASETSANA KUMALO
At the age of 40, she is as flawless as the day she was crowned Miss South Africa in 1994. She reigns as one of South Africa’s leading business woman, with a 50% ownership of Tswelopele (a production company behind shows such as Top Billing). She also has investments with various other companies and manages to balance her career with her personal life as a wife and mother of two beautiful children.
MS COMSO
Also known as Noni Rwaxa, Ms Cosmo is one of the most successful female Hip Hop DJ’s in South Africa. When she isn’t behind the decks at club playing the hottest hits, she is a radio presenter for 5FM. It’s no wonder so many other ambitious young women who want to be involved the hip-hop music industry, look up to Ms Cosmo and want to be just like her.
CONNIE FERGUSON
Her debut into the television industry saw her playing Karabo Moroka, on SABC 1’s Generations. However, she has since left the renowned soapie in the pursuit of establishing a production company with her husband titled Ferguson Films, which was the brain-child behind the television concept of Rockville and an upcoming feature film ‘Step Up to a Start’. It is Connie’s passion for the arts that has made her an influential being in the film industry and the reason why other actors see her as a good example to follow when looking to be part of the film industry.
DJ ZINHLE
Formally known as Ntombezinhle Jiyane, DJ Zinhle has become quite the success in her field of work as a house DJ. She is one of the few DJ’s who is the mastermind on the turntables and has a focused business ethic under her belt. In 2009 she teamed up with Nomndeni Mdaki to launch The Firm Understanding of Sound Entertainment Academy (FUSE), the first DJing academy for girls. Zinhle now also has a new range of watches under the name ERA, which represents successful, determined and fabulous people.
UNATHI MSENGANA
Television and radio personality Unathi, has grown to be adored by many. She started her work in the industry as a presenter on YFM and is now a wife, mother and a judge on Idols South Africa. Her rise to the top has created a great opportunity for her to triumph as not just a radio DJ, but as a singer as well. Her expert advice on Idols has left many motivated and made her a stellar role model.
CAROL TSHABALALA
Not only has Carol graced our August cover but she is also a highly influential woman who has earned her right to be the foremost loved female sports presenter for the SABC and SuperSport’s channels. Her hard work has earned her every right to stand tall as the leading lady of sports.
AZANIA MOSAKA
The former Metro FM DJ, who is now gracing the Power FM airwaves, is not just an eminent radio DJ and television presenter with a soulful personality and igniting charisma, but also a woman with the right business ideas. She has teamed up with Egoagwu Iwegbu-Daley to open two Miss Salon London Nail Boutiques in South Africa. Her drive to be the finest in whatever she does puts her on our top ten most influential women list.
