The highly anticipated Joburg Film Festival will take place from 19 to 24 November 2019 and will showcase movies from across Africa and the globe. By Fundiswa Nkwanyana
Film enthusiasts are counting down to the Joburg Film Festival that will feature exceptional curated films. Apart from the screening of films, there will also be red carpet premieres, awards and panel discussions with leading industry experts.
Here are a few films not to miss:
1. Letters of Hope. The award-winning Xhosa film, with English subtitles, is set during the apartheid era. It is about a 16-year-old boy who doesn’t understand why his father won’t allow him to be a police officer. After the death of his father, he makes a discovery that leaves him in a predicament.

2. Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami. The film takes an in-depth look into the life of the androgynous and famous Grace Jones. It also features some of her most iconic performances. Get a chance to see who she really is away from the spotlight.
3. Sprinter. Set in Jamaica, this film tells a story about the highs and lows of a hopeful track and field record-breaking athlete who has many challenges to overcome in order to reach his full potential.

4. Luce. A psychological thriller about an all-star student and a teacher who makes a discovery that could ruin the student’s life. It’s a thought-provoking film that looks at the stereotypes about young black men in America.
These films will be screened at the Auto & General Theatre at Nelson Mandela Square and Ster-Kinekor in Sandton City. Other venues across Joburg include Bioscope in Maboneng, Constitution Hill, Cinema Nouveau Rosebank and Kings Cinema in Alexandra.
