DJ Sabby is not just a radio presenter on YFM, but a fashion starter and businessman. We chat to him about the GetPaid movement and share some financial advice.
The best thing DJ Sabby could ever do was to follow his passion for radio, and all his hustle paid off when he got his own daytime slot on YFM. But, that isn’t all he does. Perhaps his ways of making his dreams come true will inspire you.
What is GetPaid?
This is a movement I started with my business partner Thapelo Mokoena (not the actor) to empower people to be better and do more. If you are working hard, you will be rewarded for your hard work. When you are focused on your success, then you will do well.
How did this movement begin?
It all started when I was working the 12am–3am slot on YFM and using the famous hash tag #Teamnosleep. This inspired my listeners and I to keep working hard for what we wanted and never rest until we’d accomplished what we wanted out of life. Thapelo and I then decided to make T-shirts, hoodies and even caps as symbols of this.
Tell us about the clothing?
Instead of just creating a movement we wanted to invest in something that would be tangible for the supporters GetPaid. We are now selling the branded clothing in a store called Americana in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. We want to sell at more stores and grow the fashion side of the movement. Those who cannot buy the branded clothing at the stores can contact me for orders.
People may be inspired by the movement, but how do they get to the level at which they are successful and earning a living?
If you want to make it and be a success, you have to be willing to put in the hours and make an effort. If you want to get a distinction in your exam, you have to study hard, if you want to be a qualified doctor, you have to go to university and push. Just keep hustling.
What financial advice would you give people who want to manage their finances as well as you do?
You should never stop working towards your financial goal. And you could never go wrong with saving; the little you have can go a long way. People tend to think that they have to earn millions before they could start saving, but that isn’t the case. You would be amazed what a mere R50 could do for you.
What is the best financial advice you’ve received?
- When you don’t need it, don’t buy it!
- Do less of the renting and more of the owning. Currently, I am working towards owning my car and home so I make a greater investment.
What has been your greatest investment?
I think saving money to build my mother a house last year was the best thing ever!
