Famous for his hit single Seng’khathele, house vocalist Shota Mdabe returns to the music scene with his new album Timeless, which will be released at the end of May. We chat to him about his music and his new album.
How long did it take you to record this album?
It took me five months to record the album.
What was the inspiration for the album?
Love, happiness and appreciation of the support my fans have shown me all these years.
Your album is produced internationally – why is that?
I wanted to hear their interpretation of South African house music, and also to expand my brand and business. But, I also worked with local producers.
What can your fans expect from the album?
They can expect some fireworks and good quality dance music, with messages that will inspire them.
You are also planning an international tour – is this part of a plan to tap into the overseas market?
Yes, it’s about time we export our talent and products as Africans, as opposed to worshiping Americans.
How different is this album from your previous releases?
This album has a mature sound; it’s more musical, with live instruments and it’s upbeat.
You have been very scarce in the media since your single Seng’khathele – what have you been up to?
I have done a bit of travelling outside the country, spent time with my family and there are other businesses that I have ventured into.
What inspires you to continue making music?
Music is the only way I know how to express myself to the masses. I love music; it’s part of my life.
Did you write any songs on this album?
Yes, I wrote all of them.
You also own a production company – tell us more about that?
My company is called ShotaMusic PTY (LTD), which was formed in 2007. It’s an independent record label company that produces music, signs artists and offers music lessons and workshops to aspiring musicians and producers.
What advice would you give to an aspiring musician?
I would tell them to research, work hard, be patient and passionate.
