Despite house music being a genre saturated with male vocalists, Vusi Nova has managed to set himself apart from his competitors. We find out more about his rise to the top of music charts.
Tell us about yourself.
I was born in New Brighton Township, Port Elizabeth. I have a great bond with my family. I love playing chess, polo cross and watching movies. I’m a junkie for fast cars, speed and music (of course).
What have you been working on?
I have been promoting my album, Did It For Love, and I am working on new material for a project called Brothers of Soul.
What challenges have you faced as a musician?
I have to share personal stuff with the world because it connects me to my audience. Surviving financially is not easy because of piracy and illegal downloads.
If you weren’t a musician, what would you be?
Music has always been my plan A. I don’t have other plans, dreams or goals. But if I was forced to work, I would be the president!
How do you differentiate yourself from other male vocalists in the industry?
First of all, I’m an individual, so that makes me unique and different from everybody else. I’m always true to myself. I also have my own tone, which in itself is unique.
How has the market received your album?
The public has embraced it well. Initially, it was a struggle as people were still hooked on the first album Walk into Light. South Africa has got to hear me in various genres. I’m not the cover version vocalist people think I am.
What inspires your music?
I’m inspired by things that happen to normal everyday people. I’m also passionate about love – I’m in love with love!
What is your favourite track on your album?
My favourite collaboration has to be Baby, featuring Kelly Khumalo, which also happens to be my next single coming out soon. Don’t be afraid to request it on radio! My favourite song is Andizazi – I have always loved afro pop.
What advice do you have for aspiring musicians?
Stay true to yourself, work on your craft, and never forget where you came from. Treat everyone with respect and never ever be late for an interview! Remember to put love into everything you do.
What can fans expect from you this year?
I’ll be traveling a lot this year. I want to get to know all my fans around the country. I plan on doing in-store visits in various regions, starting with Port Elizabeth.
