1. As a child, I used to mimic dance moves from the popular 90s pop group Boom Shaka. I fell in love with the art of dancing by looking at the group’s dance moves. I would spend hours observing the routines, and then practise them to perfection. Once I knew them, I would show them off at family gatherings and concerts.
2. In 2007, I became heavily involved in the dance culture. I developed my own style after working with different choreographers and exploring dancing to various genres. I also expanded my repertoire and was able to secure dance gigs. I learnt about the business side of dance on the job, and moved from just dancing to being a choreographer that employs dancers.
3. The remuneration of dancers in South Africa is a constant battle. This is because many people don’t see dancing as a serious profession. Dancers are approached in the most understated way while a great deal of work is expected, with little remuneration. I wish for this perception to change because the dance industry has a lot of growth potential.
4. Dancing has opened many doors for me in the entertainment industry.
It was through it that I got my first acting role. This was in Africa’s first dance film, Hear Me Move, where I played the lead. Thereafter, I was the host and judge of a variety talent show called Showville on SABC 2. I have also choreographed for shows such as Lip Sync Battle Africa and MTV Africa Music Awards. I’m a choreographer, actress and presenter through dance.
5. The trick to being a successful dancer is to continuously hone your craft.
It is important to be aware of what you’re genuinely good at, and continue to master your craft. Work tirelessly on it while learning about the business. Most importantly, be open to learning as you can grow into a versatile entertainer.
