Musician Brenda Mtambo recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of her second album So Much More. She chats to us about her journey in music and future plans. By Kwanele Mathebula
1. I was born in Empangeni and grew up in Umlazi, Durban. I was raised by my strict grandparents. I realized that I could sing when I was in Grade 1; I remember leading songs and singing during the school’s assembly. I was shy and quiet but could express myself through singing.
2. I studied BCom Accounting. I chose this because after growing up poor, I wanted to change my circumstances through education. Pursuing music as a career was never my plan. It was just something I did in my spare time until I joined gospel group Joyous Celebration.
3. I was a part of Joyous Celebration for 10 years. I learnt everything I know about music through the group. I grew musically and realized that I could turn my love for music into a successful career. Travelling the world and performing to big crowds prepared me for my solo career.
4. I find it hard to describe my music. I consider myself a versatile artist, and cannot define myself by a genre. But, I would be referred to as an Afro-soul/Jazz artist in the music industry. I have been exposed to a variety of music, so my sound is vast and versatile.

5. Recording my second album So Much More was a great experience. Although I was pregnant and easily tired at the time, the process was beautiful. I also got the opportunity to work with award-winning producer Sipho Sithole.
6. Celebrating a year since the release of my album feels unreal! The album created a lot of opportunities for me. I am looking back with gratitude and excited to be doing something I love. People also have been great, especially my fans as they have carried me through.

7. Musician Thami Shobede features me in his song Letting Go, that is out at the moment. House music duo Revolution also features me in a song that is coming out soon. I’m excited for people to hear it because they are going to be surprised. I am looking forward to meeting people through the shows I am part of, and to release new music next year. Watch out for more great collaborations.
