Others have called it braai day, while many prefer the term Heritage Day. We speak to ten South African celebs about the importance of this day.
LEHASA MOLOI
Braai day means connecting with different cultures and celebrating them. My friends and family have an annual braai day, I hosted it last year, so I am still waiting for an invite for this year’s one from one of my friends.
CAROL RALEFETA
Well, to be honest, when I think about braai day, I think of meat, a cooler bag and family. This is sad because, the day is about embracing your heritage. I am Pedi and proud but we will still be having a braai at the Ofori Household.
THABISO MAKHUBELA
To me the day is about sunshine, togetherness of friends and family over a good braai culinary experience. Got my braai recipes out and ready. Will get lots of meat and enjoy it all at the BIC Braai Day in Sun City.
KHANYA MKANGISA
I am a proud Xhosa girl so on Braai day I try my best to make sure that I do all things Xhosa and still hang out with family and friends to have some delicious meat!
DJ ZABA SIMBINE
The joys of being in radio is that you work on public holidays, but after the show I will spend the day with family and make lots of traditional food.
FLORENCE MASEBE
It is important that people know that culture is embodied in us. We need to know our languages not only as actors but as South Africans. We need to learn how to pronounce our own names. Our heritage should not be about having a braai but celebrating our culture. I have already prepared some African beer and looking forward to whatever else the day will bring.
ZINHLE MABENA
I will be working on the 24th, but may spend the last weekend of heritage month with my family, especially the elders. I do think it’s important for South African’s to be comfortable with whom they are, and take note of the fact that we are all equal no matter what culture. We should constantly be proud of who we are.
MAPS MAPONYANE
For me the day is about knowing where you come from and knowing the history of your country. There are different ways to celebrate the day, like having a braai. I will be spending time with my family and keeping it simple.
BOITY THULO
I would love to go home and be with my family. The family represents culture and my roots. I think it’s important we acknowledge how special we are as South Africans to exist among different cultures and people.
LORNA MASEKO
Not sure what I will be up to on the day. However, the day is to celebrate who we are as South Africans. And personally I feel the older I get the more important it is for me to know who I am as a South African.
