Renowned Nigerian musician Femi Kuti, popular for the 90s hit song Beng Beng Beng, chats to us about his upcoming performance at the DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival.
1. My late father, Fela Kuti, was a huge influence in my life. I have fond childhood memories of listening to him create music, and watching him perform to a large audience. He influenced my taste in music, and made me aware of Africa’s political and social issues from a young age. Playing in his band also gave me insight into his music composition style.
2. My inspiration comes from the world we live in. Everything around me gets my creative juices flowing, and inspires me to write songs. I write music that speaks about my take on social issues, my emotions and memories. I’m very aware of what is happening around me, and it influences my music.
3. I’m excited about performing at the DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival. People can expect to be moved, and to dance non-stop as my band and dancers will bring a Nigerian musical vibe. My heart and soul will be in my performance, and we will have fun together.
4. I believe that Africa needs love. As Africans, we need to be more united by sharing ideas and trading among each other, so we can grow together. It should be every African’s dream and goal to make Africa the envy of the world. We need to love our continent more.
The festival takes place on 7 and 8 October at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit.
