Happy Birthday Lupita Nyong’o!

Award-winning Kenyan-Mexican actress Lupita Nyong’o turns 35 today and we’re here for it! In celebration of the well-accomplished and talented Miss Nyong’o, we share seven  interesting facts about her.

  1. She was born Lupita Amondi Nyong’o in Mexico City.
  2. Her father is the influential Kenyan politician Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o.
  3. Miss Nyong’o has obtained a bachelor’s degree in film and theater studies from Hampshire College in the United States.
  4. Lupita started her Hollywood career as a production assistant.
  5. Her first acting debut was in the short film East River in the year 2008.

6. Lupita has written, produced and directed the documentary In My Genes.

7. In 2015, Lupita made her Broadway debut in the critically acclaimed play Eclipsed as a teenage orphan.

8. Nyong’o holds numerous awards including several for her film role Patsey in Steve McQueen’s drama 12 Years a Slave (2013).

9. She’s an advocate for animal rights and is vocal about women’s rights.
