Jazz lovers will be treated to a diverse and talented line-up, featuring world-renowned and local jazz musicians at this year’s festival in Makhanda, formerly known as Grahamstown.
Here’s who will be performing at the Standard Bank Jazz Festival
The festival, which is part of the National Arts Festival, will showcase performances from Marcus Wyatt’s 17-piece ZAR Orchestra, Grammy-award-winning group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Shane Cooper’s Mabuta, Mafikizolo and the 2019 Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz, Mandla Mlangeni, and many more.
Over the 10 days of the festival, audiences can expect a compelling musical journey through the decades of South Africa’s jazz history, reaching back to the late 80s and travelling through to the present day.
The highly anticipated performance will be from Mandla Mlangeni. He is expected to give the audience a glimpse into his explorations of avant-garde African jazz through performances with his Tune Recreation Committee, as well as a revisit of Amandla Freedom Ensemble’s 12-track odyssey, Born to Be Black.
There will be diverse jazz performances ranging from big bands and intimate soirees to jazz parties and youth performances. To attend the festival taking place from 27 June until 7 July, purchase tickets at nationalartsfestival.co.za
