Popular actress Mogau Motlhatswi, known for her role as Mapitsi on SABC 1 drama series Skeem Saam, talks to us about her love for reading.
1. When I was a little girl, my grandmother used to read the bible to me. She would read it in an animated tone, using gestures to make it more interesting. I enjoyed sitting by her side and listening to her reading to me. As I grew older, I started reading to her, and in so doing became an avid reader.
2. I read fiction and motivational books. I love fiction because it’s imaginative, and filled with adventures that take me to a different world. I also enjoy books by black female authors, such as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, because her well-written stories also talk about strong, black women. As a goal-oriented person, motivational books inspire me to reach my goals. One of them is to be a director one day.
3. I make sure that I schedule time to read. This is important because there are many distractions that can prevent you from reading. I find that committing to reading for at least 15 minutes is better than not reading at all.
4. I love this year’s National Book Week (NBW) theme #OURSTORIES.
As a proud NBW ambassador, I’m excited because we all have amazing stories to share with the world. I want to play a role in exposing at least one person to a great book that can change their perspective on life.
*The 8th annual National Book Week runs from 4 to 10 September 2017.
