Comedian Loyiso Madinga tells us how he carved his way into the stand-up comedy circles, and about participating in a nationwide tour.
1. I have always enjoyed listening to, and telling jokes. As a child, I loved watching comedy shows on TV; my favourite was the 90s series titled In Living Color. Back then, I didn’t know that I would one day become a comedian.
2. My career began at a comedy event. I used to enjoy a comedy gig called Awehdnesday. It was organised by comedian Donovan Goliath. After watching a number of shows, I asked Donovan for an opportunity to get on stage and also tell jokes. The response was positive and from that moment on, I continued to tell jokes on more stages.
3. I wish that people could take us seriously. I’m carving a career as a comedian. But sometimes people take my job as a big joke, instead of a profession. They have laughed at me while I was giving them solid advice. This is a difficult part of my job, but I am learning to embrace it.
4. I am excited to be part of the Trending Comics nationwide tour. Young and upcoming comedians like me will get an opportunity to perform on stand-up club stages in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. I can’t wait to make people laugh!
The Trending Comics nationwide tour starts on 20 October in Cape Town.
