South African Guild for Actors (SAGActors), an organisation representing actors in the film, television, stage, commercial & corporate sectors, in South Africa are on a bid to amend the existing Performers Protection Act. The organisation is calling for the bill which dates back to 1967, to be changed as it currently fails to protect performer’s rights. Local actors such as Salamina Mosese, Renate Stuurman and Sisanda Henna have joined in on the call to protect their rights.
SAGActors will appear before Parliament to make an oral submission for on the Performers Protection Amendment Bill on 13 September.
Here’s a look at what they had to day.
I am Salamina Mosese & I am an Actor.
It’s 2018 and I still do not have the right to own my image or share in the profits of its distribution. We need to change this. That is why I support SAGA’s submission to adopt the PERFORMERS PROTECTION AMENDMENT BILL#IamActorSA #SAGAforPPAB pic.twitter.com/yxXPjCTXco— Salamina Mosese (@salaminaM) September 11, 2018
POLITICAL WILL: when leaders end Apartheid-era exploitation & enable residuals for actors.
POLITICAL WON’T: when leaders make long speeches about injustice when another actor dies in hunger & poverty.
Which leaders will we meet in Parliament on Thurs?#SAGAforPPAB @SAGActors— Jack Devnarain (@JackD157) September 11, 2018

The SABC doesn’t have a monitoring system for repeats or resale to new territories.
My mother is the one to call me and say “I’m watching you on TV! You didn’t tell me that show is repeating?”
Well, that’s because I didn’t know.
That’s why I am with @SAGActors. #SAGAforPPAB

Dear @ParliamentofRSA please prioritise the Performers Protection Amendment Bill, without it artists continue to be enslaved by unjust contracts and unworkable agreements.
