He started as a dancer, now he’s a rapper. Real name Gcina Nkula, popularly known as DotCom tells us about his journey into music and more.
For those who are not aware of your talents, please tell us about your role in the music industry?
I’m a rapper and singer. The song ‘Get Mine’ was my first single released in 2010. I believe this is when I gained the musical respect I needed from my peers and others in the industry.
You were popularly known as one of South Africa’s hip hop dancer’s, when did you drift into music, and how did this happen?
I’ve always rapped since high school in between dancing, but decided to take it seriously in 2008 and started off in a rap/R&B group called ICU.
Please tell us more about your music?
My first single ‘Get Mine’ was released independently, and soon after I released a mixtape called ‘Music Over Everything’. I recently released a song called ‘Izapha’ featuring Cassper Nyovest which has been doing extremely well on the airwaves and music channels. Da L.E.S and I also featured on a single by Dj Speedsta called ‘Bad Chick’. My next single is called ‘The One’ – an R&B song off the Showlove album with visuals to drop soon.
How do you make sure you keep fit and have the right look, especially in the hip-hop industry?
I try to maintain a healthy diet and exercise as much as possible.
What do you do to make sure your keep your head in the game?
I listen to different genres of music, old and new, and I try spending as much time as possible in studio perfecting my craft.
What was the best advice you had ever received? Who was it from and how did it come in handy?
Words from my dad: “Always stay humble, maintain good relationships and treat people the same even when you climb up the ladder because you don’t know where people will end up in the future”.
Although your relationship is not too public, fans would like to know how you do keep your relationship with your girlfriend (Nadia Nakia- the female SA rapper) healthy.
