“A human busy being” is Siya’s (@scooopmakhathini) simple twitter handle. Our features editor, Phila Tyekana, unpacks the different layers that make up this trendsetter.
TURN UP
I felt TV lacked a sense of variety and so I decided to create this show. It airs on Vuzu, weekdays at 4pm. The show is about promoting new music, artists, creativity and urban culture. I love how the show doesn’t focus on already established artists but rather on those that are trying to break into the industry.
WHY I TOOK A BREAK FROM TV
I disappeared from TV and left V-Entertainment for a little while because I needed a break from the celebrity world. I needed to get away from being a celeb and from having to go to work report on celebs.
RADIO
After four years of being on the station, my time with YFM was done. I’m grateful for the platform the station allowed us to have by showcasing upcoming hip hop acts. My focus now is on the production company I run with Lungile Radu, Thomas Gumede and Simphiwe Mhlongo called, Parental Advisory Productions. We’ve done shows including Mo Love, which is our own reality show, Forever Young, iRequest and Turn Up.
FOREVER YOUNG
We are still deciding on whether there will be a third season. The idea behind the reality show was to break the stigma that working on TV is easy. We wanted to showcase the problems we all go through as presenters and actors, and show the mechanics behind how an idea eventually formulates into a TV show.
PIECESSA.CO.ZA
Pieces is an online street wear clothing store I started in 2011. Men don’t have a variety of clothing and that’s why I started the label; to offer men quality clothing at an affordable price. The style and feel of it is pretty much the clothing I wear; fun and retro.
SCOOP THE TRENDSETTER
I love this compliment! It’s an amazing feeling to be called that and I’m grateful for it because it gives light to what I’m doing at street level. Success is not only in the boardroom.
FATHERHOOD
My dream for my two-year-old son is for him to excel in who he is.
