The actress chats to us about the highs and lows of being the lead actress in the musical theatre production. By Fundiswa Nkwanyana
1. I’m honoured to be a part of this African musical that was premiered over 50 years ago. I think many people know the name King Kong, but are not aware of its musical influences and historical importance. The storyline touches on South Africa’s social-political reality in the 1950s and the beautiful jazz music that dominated that era while highlighting King Kong’s life as a boxer. The musical also tells an important African cautionary story while evoking the magic of Sophiatown.
2. I try my best to portray my character, Joyce, in a genuine way. She is an ambitious and bold woman trying to make a living in the dangerous times of apartheid. I had to understand why she is the way she is and make the audience understand her struggles. I love showcasing her strengths and vulnerabilities.
3. I found the musical side of my role challenging. Every song in the musical demanded all of me because it’s multidimensional. I worked hard to condition my voice and to master the musical genre that was needed. After countless rehearsals and research, I believe that I have overcome this challenge. I’m glad that I have a supportive creative team that guides and supports me.
4.I believe that this show will hold special memories with audiences. It’s captivating, with exceptional music and remarkable cast members. There are heart-wrenching moments that are lightened up by the comedy and lively dancing. I believe that at the end of the show audiences will be on their feet singing and dancing along. It’s definitely a memorable musical.
King Kong is showcasing at the Joburg Theatre from 12 September to 8 October 2017.
