A 70-year-old Ugandan woman named Safina Namukwaya reportedly gave birth to twin babies recently.
Reported by American news agency Today, the 70-year old gave birth to a baby boy and girl on the 29th of November through the in vitro fertilization (IVF), 31 weeks into her pregnancy. The twins are said to have been born each weighing around 3 pounds (1.36kg) at Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Center in Kampala, Uganda.
In a video interview video with the above mentioned news agency, Safina who shared her excitement at having twins was quoted through an interpreter saying:
“Some might argue that 70 years is old, but God decided that I get to have twins at 70. There is no one that can put a limit on God’s authority and power.”
The twin mother is also said to have another child born in 2020, through the same procedure.
Safina was called names in her village for not having a child of her own, shares the the American news agency. Since the kids were born prematurely they are said to be receiving specialised care in ICU.
Speaking to the news agency, Safina’s doctor, Dr Edward Tamale Sali stated that his patient Safina has every right to do whatever she wants with her body regardless of her age. He also shared that shared that four donated embryos were planted on her. He was quoted saying:
“We implanted four embryos, and then of course, she conceived the twins.”
In the interview, the mother of three kids all under the age of five was quoted saying other households in her neighbourhood would help her with washing the babies and other things as she is quite elderly, this is not uncommon in African societies.
