This past Saturday, I was offered an incredible opportunity to experience the day in the life of a horse racing enthusiast at the Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Racecourse. For one day only, I was a part of the upper echelons of horse racing and got an up-close and personal view of the ins and outs and all the moving bits that go into the well-oiled product that we as guests get to enjoy.
Despite my late arrival, I was welcomed by very friendly staff who greeted me with a cool glass of champagne to get settled comfortably. I was then given a small crash course that helped me understand the races and what to look out for, before placing a bet. If I had not mentioned this yet, we were each given a few vouchers to bet on a few races, which was such a thrilling feeling. I found myself having to reel myself in and have a small pep talk about the dangers of gambling because it got so addictive. This also gave me a whole new respect for gamblers as I now know the kind of restraint that is needed.
After a few races, our mains arrived, I had ordered a sirloin steak paired with a side of vegetables and grilled potato, however, what I got was the juiciest, most tender steak I have tasted in such a long time. The meal went down well with the wine and champagne that was flowing throughout the day. For dessert, I went with a more simple and traditional option, a waffle that was paired with vanilla ice cream and some chocolate sauce. This took me back to my days as a young girl when we’d go to Spur with my family, this dessert would always be my go-to.
Up next, we got the ultimate VIP experience when we were taken to the control room, where we saw the hard work that goes into calling a single race, where the steward explained in detail everything we would need to look out for if we were in his shoes. This was truly informative as a first-timer in this industry, and it opened my eyes to the hard work that goes into the sport, as we often see the final product as spectators.
The group was also taken down to the area where the horses prepare for races and got a thorough explanation about the vetting processes that are required before a horse is deemed ready for a race. One of the most exciting moments of the day was getting an up-close and personal view of the start of a race, nothing compares to witnessing the adrenaline rush from the jockey, all the way to the horse.
Overall, I would give this experience a 9/10 and that missing point is only because I arrived late and, therefore did not get the full experience. I would highly recommend this experience for first-timers, the horse racing industry is not as intimidating as you would expect and is just as exciting as any other sport. Furthermore, the Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Racecourse offers a wholesome experience, for those looking for a good meal paired with equally delicious drinks with a great view and awesome company, I would highly recommend giving them a visit.
