Tributes are pouring in for Crystal-Donna Roberts, the gifted actress and television presenter from Cape Town, who passed away at the age of 40 after a prolonged fight with cancer.
Her husband, Schalk Cornelessen, shared the heartbreaking news earlier today through a heartfelt post on Facebook, leaving friends, family, and fans in deep mourning.
Crystal-Donna, whose stellar career encompassed both film and television, is best remembered for her captivating roles in acclaimed films such as ‘The Endless River’ (2015) and ‘Krotoa’ (2017). Her performance in the latter earned her the prestigious South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) for Best Actress in a Feature Film in 2018, marking a high point in her illustrious career.
In a tribute shared on social media, Ashley Rix poignantly reflected on Roberts’ inspiring journey.
‘Crystal-Donna’s journey was one of resilience and inspiration. A breast cancer survivor, she openly shared her experience, becoming a beacon of hope and strength for many facing similar battles.’
‘Beyond her professional achievements, Crystal-Donna was a cherished wife to her husband, Schalk, whom she married on October 24, 2015. Her warmth, kindness, and unwavering spirit touched the lives of all who knew her,’ Ashley wrote.
Penguin Films, the production company behind the popular television show Arendsvlei, remembered Roberts as ‘an absolute professional’ with a deep well of talent. Her portrayal of Janice in Arendsvlei, for which she received two SAFTA nominations, endeared her to audiences.
‘Her character was loved by all for being feisty, sexy, yet deeply emotional.’
‘Having worked closely with her over several years, I witnessed her struggle with cancer. Throughout her treatment, she was determined to work with her innate strength and commitment, which were extraordinary and admirable. She will be missed by her colleagues and by all the South African viewers who loved her. Her legacy will live on through her body of work,’ Penguin Films said in a statement.
The mayor of Mossel Bay, Dirk Kotzé, paid tribute to Roberts’ compassion, highlighting her contributions to the community.
‘She was a firm partner and friend of the Mossel Bay Community Soup Drive, often stepping in as a guest speaker to motivate young people, but also assisting at their local projects.’
‘Roberts touched the lives of countless South Africans not only through her performances but also through her vast capacity for compassion,’ Dirk shared.
As the South African entertainment industry grapples with the loss of one of its brightest stars, fans and colleagues alike are left to remember not just her talent, but her spirit that exemplified strength, resilience, and an unwavering dedication to her craft and community.
