While the West African genre of Afrobeats has claimed tremendous international recognition over the past few years, the local music genre amapiano is quickly becoming a worldwide fan-favourite too. So much that even the well-respected rapper Nasty C feels the genres are better than hip hop.
Speaking in his recent live Ivyson Gaming Sessions on Twitch, Nasty C hesitantly admitted that the above two genres were better than his own genre of music. “Okay, let me explain, obviously not all amapiano songs, obviously not all Afrobeats songs. But, I’m talking about in general, I’m talking about the sh*t that goes viral, the sh*t that goes mainstream… most of it.”
He further explained that when he listens to Afrobeats, he hears “a lot of live instrumentation, original melodies and actual good singing.” Nasty C also gave credit to the music videos made under the genre, saying, “These n*ggas are creative as f*ck and let’s not lie to each other, Nigeria has been leading when it comes to music videos for a very long time!”
The rapper had similar sentiments about amapiano, adding that the genre is motivating while also having a lot of substance.
Speaking about hip hop, the Bookoo Bucks hitmaker shared, “We sample a lot, so that means we don’t have a lot of new original melodies, we’re taking melodies from jazz, slow jam, Jamaican music, music from here, music from there, Indian music. We’re taking it, we’re flipping it, we’re morphing it.”
He followed the above with, “I’m not hating on it, I’m not being ungrateful to hip hop, I love these beats, I love hip hop, I am hip hop to the core, I’m hip hop till I die. But the truth is the truth, Afrobeats and amapiano are better than hip hop, music-wise.”
“These songs, are songs, with hip hop, we’re out here playing this weird game where it’s like everyone is fake rich, everyone is fake balling and fake player, everyone is fake gangster. All these hip hop songs are a disgrace, let’s just be honest.”
