Sooner rather than later, DJ Khaled and his crew might have to sign over the masters to his hit song ‘All I do is win’ as someone in South Africa needs to use it at any point in time. On today’s edition of ‘Which South African came out on top?’ we have Phumelele Cafu who was crowned the new WBO super-flyweight champion.
Despite an unbeaten record, Phumelele came into the match-up as the underdog, as he faced Japan’s Kosei Tanaka. In an epic display of boxing, where both fighters fought their best, Phumelele edged Kosei out in the fifth round with a powerful right hook, which ultimately led to his victory.

Those who have been keeping up consider this victory as the redemption of Phumelele’s countryman Sivenathi Nonsthinga, who had lost his title just days before. Early in the match, Tanaka looked like to clear winner, as his strategy to outsmart Phumelele with his footwork and agility paid off. However, it was in the third round that things got exciting, with both fighters showing glimpses of success.
Phumelele’s victory is welcomed with warmth and excitement in Mzansi, as many athletes who put on their national uniform aim to represent South Africa with pride. Similar to many other wins, South Africans are celebrating the win as if it is their own, and Minister Gayton McKenzie is among those celebrating with Phumelele.
