Awards season is officially in full swing, with the Golden Globes and Emmy Awards both in the spotlight this January. The Emmys, which took place in Los Angeles on Monday, saw a host of A-listers clench their awards for the best in television.
Let’s have a look at this year’s stand-out Emmy moments!
Succession dominated the awards
There were three TV series on everyone’s lips this season: The Bear and Succession – which steamed on Showmax in South Africa – as well as Netflix’s Beef.
Sarah Snook who plays Shiv, Kieran Culkin who stars as Roman and Matthew Macfadyen as Tom all won awards for their roles in the hit show, Succession. The series also bagged its own award for best drama series, overall.
Matthew Macfadyen won Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, Sarah Snook took Best Actress in a Drama Series, and Kieran Culkin took the cake as winner of Best Actor in a Drama Series.
Sir Elton John earned an EGOT
Now’s the time to blast Rocket Man at full volume in celebration of Sir Elton John, who won his very first Emmy Award. The win was a double whammy, finally earning Sir John an EGOT status – having won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award throughout his lifetime.

Despite being unable to receive his award in person due to a recent operation, Sir Elton John wrote on social media:
“We won an Emmy and I am on cloud nine!! Receiving this recognition is a testament to the passion and dedication of everyone involved, and I am so deeply grateful.”
Big love for The Bear
The Bear star Jeremy Allen White had netizens panting after appearing in a rather revealing Calvin Klein ad campaign before celebrating a total of six awards at the Emmys for the comedy-drama series, The Bear.
Jeremy Allen White earned an award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, while co-star Ayo Edebiri took Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
In his acceptance speech, White said:
“I am so full of gratitude to be standing in front of you all – I love this show so much, it filled me up, set a fire in me.”
Edebiri thanked her parents, who were in attendance at the awards, for their continued support:
“This is a show about found family and real family, and my parents are here tonight – thank you so much for loving me and letting me feel beautiful and black and proud of all of that.”
Beef as the best limited series
If you’ve got Netflix and haven’t seen Beef, you’re missing out, and the show’s Emmy award is all the proof you need to get stuck in.
Lead co-stars Ali Wong and Steven Yeun were recognised as best actress and actor in a limited series. The greater cast – Young Mazino, Maria Bello, Steven Yeun, Ali Wong, and Joseph Lee – all celebrated a win as Beef was named the most Outstanding Limited Or Anthology Series.
Quinta Brunson stole the show
Thanks to the evil gays
Everyone’s favourite icon of 2023, Jennifer Coolidge, was named Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her unforgettable role in Mike White’s internationally acclaimed satire, The White Lotus.
In her acceptance speech, Jennifer brought the jokes (as she does). The actress said that she wanted to “thank all the evil gays” for the major win. Viewers of the second season of The White Lotus will catch the reference!
Trevor Noah thanks the ‘crazy Africans’ who followed him
South Africa’s own Trevor Noah emerged from the ceremony with an Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series for The Daily Show With Trevor Noah.
In his acceptance speech, Noah joked about beating John Oliver – fellow talk-show host – despite not being voted in the same category. Noah then went on to thank the team members of The Daily Show who followed him from his home grounds in Africa, to The States.
“I told you! I told you we would beat John Oliver if he wasn’t in our category. We did it! We got rid of John Oliver!”
“I want to start by thanking the crazy Africans who followed me to this country, David Kibuuka and Joseph Opio, David Meyer, my partner in crime, the writers and the team, Roy Wood Jr. from the very beginning, Jordan Klepper, whose flight got cancelled.”
Noah added:
“This story has been so long, so crazy, so wonderful. Thank you so much to the team and the person I always thank, the crazy genius Jon Stewart. Thank you for calling me up and asking me to come join you on this crazy journey.”
Christina Applegate’s watershed moment
Dead To Me star Christina Applegate was diagnosed with with multiple sclerosis – a condition that affects the brain and nerves – in 2021. Since her diagnosis, Applegate has kept public appearances to a minimum. On the rare occasion she is spotted in public, she’s often seen walking with a cane for support.
This year, the actress graced the stage to present the category of Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy alongside the Emmy’s main host, Anthony Anderson.
As Applegate approached the stage, escorted by Anthony, audience members rose to applaud the star. This led to Applegate’s watershed moment. Brushing her tears aside, she hit the audience with a quip:
“You’re totally shaming me with disability by standing up, but it’s OK,” adding, “Body not by Ozempic.”
