Blood and water star Ama Qamata bags an acting role in the Congolese drama film Fight like a girl.
The film centers around a young Congolese woman who is forced to work in an illegal mineral mine. She later escapes her captors and finds a new life for herself as a professional boxer in the border city of Goma.
According to Hollywoodreporters, the film is billed as the first-ever Western narrative feature to shoot entirely in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is inspired by a real-life boxing club that Matthew Leutwyle and producing partner Anton Laines have been following for the past two years as part of an upcoming docu-series. Several members of the club will play supporting roles in the film.
The South African actress is set to appear alongside Rwandan actors Malaika Uwamahoro, Kennedy Mazipaka and Arthur Nkusi, and Congolese boxing champion Clarck Ntambwe.
According to Hollywoodreporters, the film will be produced through KG28Media. Ama’s manager Yvette Davis Gayle is set to serve as a producer on the film.
Congolese NBA star Serge Ibaka of the Milwaukee Bucks along with his partner Jordi Vilà Sánchez will also serve as executive producers on Fight Like a Girl.
“The story about these African women is inspiring and needs to be told,” Serge said in a statement.
Ama recently wrapped the third season of teen mystery series Blood and Water, in which she plays a teen trying to navigate the complicated world of a South African high school.
