With the premiere of The Masked Singer South Africa only a few days away, radio host and producer Anele Mdoda shared some behind-the-scenes information about the design process of the costumes that the mystery celebrities will be wearing.
Anele serves as one of the show’s producers, while the detectives will be media personality Somizi Mhlongo, DJ Sithelo Shozi, comedian Skhumba and musician J’Something. Comedian Mpho Popps is set to host the local spin-off of the popular American show.
Taking to her social media accounts, Anele shared a video explaining the process taken to get the costumes to be what they needed to be.
She captioned the post, “A very big part of The Masked Singer is… The Masks!!!!”
In the video, she says, “A lot of back and forth went into the type of costumes we would have because every mask has to be likeable, otherwise you are putting somebody in danger, immediately, before they even open their mouth. It’s the audience inside the studio that’s going to vote.”
She added, “When we teamed up with Hollywood Costumes, they were on point. They knew exactly what we needed.”
Heidi Du Toit, who started Hollywood Costumes – the country’s largest costume supplier – 27 years ago said, “This is an amazing opportunity because this is an international show that came to South Africa.”
Also in her post’s caption, Anele shared that Heidi and her team were always on standby to get the celebs in and out of their masks. “I also witnessed a few mayday maydays with horns and sparkles falling off after performances ???,” she added.
