Amid the heated debate on social media platforms, the Uber driver who allegedly threatened to rape media personality, Anele Mdoda, broke his silence and shared his side of the story.
In his turn of events, the driver who was left unnamed, denied the allegations that caused an uproar on social media. Speaking to Maphephandaba, he said that Anele requested an Uber from Souk Long Street to the Rockefeller Hotels which was a seven-minute ride. He recalled hearing a loud bang on the window, in shock, he asked what caused it, and the 947 breakfast host immediately apologised and said she hit the window with her ring by mistake.
The driver recalled that Anele started rolling the window back and forth and he noticed that she was trying to lay back in the backseat, which prompted him to ask if she was okay.
She said she was okay, but the driver could not hear whether she said she was sleepy or tipsy, trying to probe further; the driver said Anele started lashing out and shouted; “Don’t talk to me, what does the Uber rules say,” repeatedly.
The driver told the publication that he dropped her at her destination. Where she started shouting and recording.
“Not knowing she was already recording me from behind, a few seconds to Rockefeller, she said hello Instagram Live, I’m just making this video to make sure that I get to my hotel safe, that was when I realised she was recording but I didn’t care or say anything about her recording. So we arrived at Rockefeller, she spent few more seconds in the car after I’d ended the trip, eventually, she came down and left my door opened and still recording me, and stretching her hands from outside of the car to put the camera in my face so I pushed her hands away and said please don’t record me and asked her to please close my door which she refused,” said the driver.

Initially, Anele shared her horrific experience with the Uber driver; while sharing she revealed that she was not in the mood to chat, prompting the driver to allegedly say “In my country, we would rape you to teach you a lesson.”
This did not sit well with Anele, as she feared for her safety this led to her faking an Instagram live while she was recording the driver from behind.
She recounted that when she arrived at her hotel, the driver was upset when he realised that she was recording him, which led to him being aggressive and attempting to grab her phone. She also mentioned that a couple could see that she was under duress.
