South African actress Angela Sithole, celebrated for her compelling performances in popular TV shows like Lingashoni and The Queen is set to captivate audiences in the upcoming Showmax Original series Empini.
In an exclusive interview with Xabiso Ngqabe on Showmax, Angela shared insights into her preparation for the role and what viewers can expect from Empini.
When asked what drew her to the story Angela stated that she was drawn to the story of Empini because of its compelling narrative and the platform it offers through Showmax.
She particularly connects with the character of Winnie Bhodoza, appreciating her strength and the depth of her internal struggles as she strives to hold her family together.
“I think because it’s a beautiful story and the fact that Showmax does it. Also, I love that Winnie is such a strong character and there’s so much depth that goes into her. There are a lot of internal struggles she faces in order to keep the family together[..]She’s indeed an interesting character,” she explained.
Angela portrays Winnie, the wife of Khaya Bhodoza (played by Siyabonga Thwala). Winnie is a strong and charismatic character who fiercely protects the Bhodoza family’s reputation.
In portraying Winnie, Angela aims to highlight the complexities faced by women who maintain a strong exterior while dealing with internal challenges. She hopes viewers will relate to Winnie’s story and gain insight into the hidden dynamics of politics.
Angela finds her role as Winnie Bhodoza in Empini distinct from her previous characters, noting that Winnie lacks ulterior motives and is portrayed with charm and poise, unlike some of Angela’s past roles which featured more devious characters. She appreciates learning from Winnie and sees her as a refreshing departure in her career.
As a parent, Winnie displays a deep love for her children, balancing a softer approach with her son and a tougher love with her daughter, reflecting natural maternal instincts and societal realities.
Excited about the series, Sithole praises the talented cast and the compelling storyline of Empini. She especially enjoys working alongside Nambitha Ben-Mazwi again, expressing joy at their reunion since their earlier collaboration on Diamond City.
