The South African national soccer team, professionally known as Bafana Bafana, received a Fair Play award after securing third place in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) last night.
The team has shown great sportsmanship and determination throughout the tournament, giving hope to South Africans that they would make it to the finals. Unfortunately, they lost in the semi-finals to Nigeria (Super Eagles) by 4-2 in the penalty shootouts.
During the quarter-finals, Bafana Bafana beat Cape Verde by 2-1 in penalty shootouts, and their captain, Ronwen Williams, was named Player of the Match after breaking a football record of being the first goalkeeper to make four stops during a shootout session in a major tournament.
Last night, the team received their Fair Play award and Ronwen received the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award.
Taking to social media platforms, the team shared pictures of the captain as he was receiving his award. In their caption, they wrote, “Not only a bronze medal coming home but a Fair Play Award and Goalkeeper of the Tournament awarded to our Captain Ronwen Williams.”
