Award winning actor Bonko Khoza is excited about his latest acting venture as he sets to show viewers a different dimension to his capabilities, playing the role of a serial killer in Red Ink.
The eight-part thriller series is based on Angela Makholwa’s bestseller, where a journalist turned publicist, Lucy Khambule gets entangled with a serial killer after approaching him to tell his story.
With a star-studded cast which includes SAFTA winner Nqobile Nunu Khumalo who plays Lucy, Bonko plays the role of Napoleon Dingiswayo, nicknamed The Butcher.
Speaking to news publication Sunday World, the actor expresses how grateful he was that the writer Angela Makholwa allowed him freedom to portray the character in the best way possible.
“Most days we were just chatting away and laughing. I’d like to think we’ve become friends. She’s an amazing author but an even more amazing person with the kindest heart.”
“Honestly, we hardly spoke about the story; everything I needed was already in the book.”

He further added that prior to the audition it took him lots of time and sacrifice into getting himself immersed into the mind of a serial killer – so much so that he spent several hours watching six seasons of I Am A Killer.
“When we started creating things that are unique to him, the facial and neck twitches, I had to get used to that and timing those in the performance.”
Meanwhile, he revealed that he eventually became so good at what he does that the crew often wondered how he was so comfortable he was playing a killer.
Furthermore, he assured viewers that he was able to separate his character from real life.
“Me and Napoleon are worlds apart. Napoleon is easy; you put on overalls and some glasses. You switch on the things you switch on.”
