The late legend Brenda Fassie who left this earth in May 2004 has been named as a recipient of the Civic Honour award by the City of Cape Town.
Having contributed massively to the music and arts industry, the Langa born queen is deserving of this and many other honours.
Undoubtably a legend, Brenda, 39 at the time of her death left South Africans with songs that are still used at weddings almost 20 years after her death.
Civic Honours are a way to recognise extraordinary contributions or acts of service to the city and its residents. “These include upholding the rights of others, serving their community above themselves, and contributing to nation building through outstanding service and achievements”, says the City.
The recipient may be a living person, it may also be given in memory of someone who has passed. The Civic Honour awards are presented in terms of the City’s Conferment of Civic Honours Policy, which was adopted by Council on 3 December 2008.
On a social media post on X (formerly known as Twitter), the City of Cape Town announced these exciting news on a post captioned:
Far more than just a singer and songwriter, Brenda Fassie was an icon and our first true pop superstar.
Her unique talent for capturing township life in song took her from humble beginnings in Langa to stages around the world.
