A businessman invested millions of rands in getting Nigerian rapper Burna Boy’s concert in South Africa, trying all he can to ensure that his investment does not leave South African shores.
There has been a lot of drama surrounding the cancellation of Burna Boy’s Joburg concert which was supposed to take place in December following its previous postponement three months earlier.
This comes after Sedote Nwachukwu, the CEO of the prominent entertainment company Ternary Media Group and the organiser of the show, was accused of stealing R10 million from the company.
Sedote, however, fled the country and denied the allegations made against him, placing the blame on business partner Gregory Wings who he says oversaw managing the invoices and engaging with the organisers.
Following his release on suspicion of his involvement in the fraud case, Gregory has filed an interdict to stop Sedote from moving around the funds that he paid to concertgoers outside of the country.
He also aims to get back the R2 million which he claims was unlawfully paid into TicketPro’s account.
It is said that TicketPro gave Sedote an R8.1 million advance payment ahead of the highly expected concert. With Sedote fleeing the country, they turned to Gregory to pay back the settlement.
In an interview with Sunday World, Gregory shares that he met up with a representative of TicketPro, Brandon Duffield, and the two came to an agreement that he would pay back R4 million and continue doing business with them, however, his bank later froze his account which breached their agreement.
Gregory says that he was later arrested in his attempt to have a follow-up meeting to discuss the way forward and asked to pay the ticket company R2 million.
He told the above-mentioned publication that he feared being detained in a foreign country and therefore paid the amount only to find out that there is no legal obligation under South African law to do so.
Gregory now hopes to claim his money back and has also drawn an interdict against his former business partner to stop him from claiming any more funds from the damages and cancellation of the concert.
