Chidimma Adetshina is already in the lead for the Miss Universe Nigeria title days after accepting an invitation to participate in the beauty pageant.
The 23-year-old law student was forced to back out of the Miss SA finale following online bullying and a petition to remove her from the competition. Chidimma faced backlash when she made it to the Top 12 of Miss SA with online users accusing her of not being South African despite having a South African ID.
Her admission to the beauty pageant further fueled a wave of Afrophobic comments on her father being Nigerian and her mother’s Mozambican roots. This led to an investigation by Home Affairs. The probe found that Adetshina’s mom may have committed “identity fraud” to get South African nationality. She was forced to withdraw from the competition, fearing for her family’s safety.
Chidimma is now a clear favourite vying for the Miss Universe Nigeria title.
Working on the same voting system as Miss SA, Miss Universe Nigeria calls for Nigerians to vote for their favourite contestant. Judging by the number of votes Adetshina has thus far received, she’s a fan favourite.
Our girl is leading the race. Number 2 is at about 7k votes, the rest has less than 3k votes. Nigerians will learn to respect us and not interfere in our domestic issues. 😀#MissUniverseNigeria Mboro Latoya Floyd pic.twitter.com/fLNrDrDkhn

Chidimma has already clinched the lion’s share of the votes. Activist Pat Mdluli shared her progress on X (formerly Twitter) and winning the coveted title could become a reality for the model.
“Our girl is leading the race. Number 2 has about 7k votes, the rest has less than 3k votes. Nigerians will learn to respect us and not interfere in our domestic issues,” tweeted Mdluli and shared a link to vote.
Should she win the Miss Universe Nigeria crown, Adetshina will represent Nigeria at the prestigious Miss Universe competition.
