Urban streetwear brand Amakipkip is receiving backlash from after launching merchandise dedicated to Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes without the late rapper’s family’s permission.
According to reports, Amakipkip took to their Instagram page to share a picture of the T-shirt which would have cost the buyer R600.
SA Hip Hip Mag explains that the launch of the brand’s tribute merch not only commemorates AKA’s life, but it also celebrated his influence on music, fashion, and pop culture.
News of the launch did not sit well with those close to the late rapper. AKA’s brother Steffan Forbes reposted Amakipkip’s original post on his Instagram Story. He wrote, “No shame @amakipkipstore.”
AKA’s girlfriend Nadia Nakai also expressed her confusion and frustration.
“WTF!!! I thought Les [rapper Da L.E.S] just made one for himself… ” wrote Nadia on X (formerly Twitter) after an AKA fan page shared the news on the app.

Amakipkip founder Nkosana Modise spoke to The Citizen about the tribute merch, calling it a form of protest for the rapper’s justice. “I’ve got nothing to gain. It’s not even on our platform. We’re seeking justice for AKA.”
According to the above-mentioned publication, it all started when DA L.E.S wore the T-shirt to an event. Hence, Nadia’s post. Nkosana then posted a picture of the rapper wearing the T-shirt. Steffan then reportedly complained about the design of the merch as Nkosana had no consent from the family.
Says Nkosana, “The brother [asked] who gave me permission. Those who are sensible don’t have a problem. It’s more of a protest by us. He added, “I spoke to the dad [Tony Forbes] prior to the brother making noise. He’s spoiling the sentiment. The father is not fighting.”
The Amakipkip founder also shared with The Citizen that he has a meeting with the family today. “As a brand, we’re involved in hip hop. This is a rap bootleg T-shirt which is normal in hip hop. You’ve seen similar T-shirts like this of 2Pac or Biggie. It’s a way of commemorating his death.”
