One of mzansi’s fastest growing festivals – Cotton Fest – is set to make its great return!
The event which is the brainchild of the late rapper, Rikhado Makhado popularly known as Riky Rick was launched in 2019 as a way of celebrating youth culture while promoting safety and inclusivity for all attendees.
Since bursting onto the scene, the event has become extremely popular, so much that this year will mark the fifth year of its existence, this time returning to its home, at Old Station in Newtown Johannesburg on the 6th of April 2024.
In the light of the highly anticipated 7th democratic elections, which takes place on 29th May, the theme for this year’s event will be #VoteCottonFest.
A statement released by the event organisers encouraged attendees to cast their votes for the new wave in youth culture by embracing diversity and inclusivity in every aspect of the festival.
Meanwhile the event is one that not only focuses on music, but celebrates every aspect of art including fashion, lifestyle and sports.
Speaking to local publication TshisaLive, about what it means to host the event for the fifth time, the partner to Riky Rick, Bianca Naidoo said:
“It has been liberating. We have successfully managed to build a movement that is not only linked to a festival but our creative programme initiatives that support our community in the creative field.”
“Each year the festival theme changes. Last year we focused on sport. This year we focus on voting and how important the community’s voice is in shaping their future. You’ll see this come through in playful ways on the day of the festival,” she explained.
It is further revealed that there will be three live stages, with performers yet to be announced.
