The 30th edition of one of the biggest award shows in South Africa, the South African Music Awards (SAMA) is nearing, and the build-up and anticipation are well underway.
“As the South African Music Awards (SAMA) celebrate 30 years, this year’s edition promises to bring new flavours and experiences. It’s a celebration of South African music excellence and the list of nominees is no surprise, as it showcases the exceptional quality of music that local artists have produced,” the SAMA website explains.
The event’s organisers have made a concerted effort to highlight and put emphasis on two categories early in the promotion campaign. Communications Manager at the Recording Industry of South Africa (RISA) and spokesperson of the SAMA Awards Lesley Mofokeng took to Instagram to announce the nominations for the Motsepe Foundation Record of the Year, as well as the RiSA Audio Visual (RAV) Music Video of the Year.

“It is with great pride that I salute all the artists who have been shortlisted as nominees for Motsepe Foundation Record of the Year and RAV Music Video of the Year awards. Artist recognition is an important and significant pat on the back, and we continue this tradition in our 30th year of existence. It is beautiful to see how music and artists have evolved over the years…“I would like to encourage music lovers to play their part by voting for their favourites – what good is an award ceremony without the input of the fans?” says RiSA CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi.
It is the battle of the Tyler/Tyla’s as Tyler ICU and ‘Water’ hit-maker Tyla will be going head-to-head as both are nominees for the record of the year. The list of nominees is indeed star-studded, and the winner will be announced in what Lesley promises to be “one the most monumental celebrations of South African Music.”
Voting for the show is now officially open.
