This recent election season has brought about some unexpected trials and tribulations for Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) as some of their shot callers have jumped ship to opposition parties. Amid the turmoil, EFF members and supporters have rallied behind Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi following questionable treatment from his party.
For multiple reasons, the establishment of Jacob Zuma’s Mkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party was a chaotic turn of events in South Africa’s political sphere, including the former president’s allegiance to the ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC). Not only did Jacob Zuma take ANC voters and supporters along with him to the MK, but he also managed to capture a significant percentage of the EFF’s following. This revealed a few weaknesses among the EFF, and establishing a clear, concise plan of action moving forward would be imperative for Julius’ organisation.
The final nail on the head that generated some panic among the EFF’s supporters is Floyd Shivambu’s unexpected move to the MK Party. This was not only a personal blow to the CIC, as the two were known to have an extremely close relationship outside of politics but it was also a significant blow to the party at large as Floyd was an integral part of the EFF’s ideologies.
Although it has not been confirmed, this unexpected shift in the EFF has reportedly triggered some unravelling from the CIC as he has proceeded with some questionable decisions since the departure of some of his crucial pieces. Julius started by denouncing EFF leaders who remained silent while the party faced harsh criticism due to Floyd’s departure, which included founding member Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi.
Furthermore, the word on social media is that the EFF has begun sidelining Mbuyiseni from some of the party’s important activities, such as the upcoming National People’s Assembly that is set to take place this December. Furthermore, he has been notably absent from some of the EFF’s key meetings, which has resulted in the speculation of a possible suspension.
Although the people’s “bae” has expressed that he has no interest in filling Floyd’s deputy president position that is currently vacant, his barring from attending the National People’s Assembly, where the decision for new leadership will be decided has led many members and outsiders to believe that Mbuyiseni might be the next EFF member who is out of the door.
This chaotic situation has caused tension in the EFF, as some members have rallied behind Mbuyiseni to express their unwavering support. It is no secret that Mbuyiseni has been the EFF’s ideal candidate to take the leadership position, and with Floyd gone, rumour has it Julius might want any potential threat to his reign neutralised, which would lead to Ndlozi’s exit.
Ndlozi is indeed being targeted by EFF members, it does raise questions about internal dynamics within the party. Julius Malema’s silence, is unusual in such circumstances, could imply a shift in alliances or an intentional distancing. All this to make sure he does not get the DP
