The family of award-winning comedian, actor, and writer Ebenhaezer ‘Ebby’ Dibakwane has confirmed that he died by suicide on March 7 at the age of 31.
Preliminary findings suggested this, with a post-mortem examination expected to confirm it.
In a heartfelt statement, his family expressed their deep sorrow while acknowledging the overwhelming support they have received: “The past few days have been extremely tough as we try to come to terms with this tragedy.
“We are deeply touched and immensely grateful for the outpouring of love, comfort, and support from so many.”
Ebby was widely known for his infectious humour and ability to bring joy to others. However, behind the laughter, he privately battled depression for many years.
His family hopes his passing serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health: “While this loss is devastating, we pray that it encourages people to check in on each other and prioritise their emotional well-being. Seeking professional help when needed is essential.”
To honour his life and legacy, friends and colleagues have organised a tribute event at The Bioscope in Johannesburg on March 12, where loved ones will gather to celebrate his impact.
His funeral service is planned for March 14 at Church Unlimited, Plot 99, R40 (towards Barberton), Maggiesdal, Mbombela, Nelspruit, starting at 7am.
For anyone struggling with depression or suicidal thoughts, the family urges reaching out for support. The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) can be contacted at 0800 567 567 (toll-free), offering free and confidential assistance to those in need.
