South Africa’s banking institution First National Bank (FNB) recently received a lot of backlashes after it closed former president of the Republic of South Africa, Jacob Zuma’s accounts that allegedly received R7.8 million loan from VBS.
According to Sunday World, the news was confirmed by six other sources.
Speaking on the matter, one of Zuma’s lawyers who asked to remain anonymous confirmed the account’s closure detailing that it was alone taken in 2016 and not a bribe.
The lawyer further insinuated that the former president’s bank account closure was politically motivated commenting, “now they decide to close my client’s account in 2024, less than three months after he launched a new political party. Is that a coincidence?”
When social media got hold of the news, internet users created a LeaveFNB hashtag with many people cutting their cards, expressing that they were ready to change banks.
While the hashtag was gaining momentum, the banking institution decided to spin things around, creating its own hashtag called LoveFNB, they went further to introduce an exciting competition where one could win R1000 just by using the hashtag and telling how they can use the banking app to pay:
“Bo dali, long weekend is around the corner, & we know you’ll be with your faves. Geo Pay on the FNB App is another way to split the bill. 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗹𝘆 using #LoveFNB & tell us how you can use the FNB App to pay this long weekend & you could win a voucher to the value of R1k.”
